End Encampment Sweeps
What is a sweep? Why do they happen? What can we do to be good neighbors to unsheltered homeless folks? I collaborated with my fellow Democratic Socialists of America activists to create the Good Neighbor Guide to Encampment Sweeps. When a homeless encampment is forcibly displaced by the Police Department, the City’s Department of Public Works, a private security force, it’s called a “sweep”.
It’s a traumatic and frequent experience for people who are forced to live on the streets. We created a guide for housed allies to educate them about sweeps and ask them to commit to not reporting encampments.
The guide went viral and other DSA chapters and homelessness advocacy groups are now using localized versions of the guide to demand the end of encampments sweeps in their cities.
